An Initiative of Mahatma Gandhi State Institute of Rural Development and Panchayat Raj, Jabalpur
Under the Capacity Building Programme organized by the Mahatma Gandhi State Institute of Rural Development and Panchayat Raj, Jabalpur, extensive training sessions were conducted for elected public representatives to strengthen local self-governance and enhance the effectiveness of Panchayati Raj Institutions.
From June 2008 to November 2008, a large-scale training initiative was successfully implemented in Khandwa district. During this period, a total of 6,536 public representatives from 413 Gram Panchayats across all 7 development blocks of the district participated in the programme. The training focused on improving administrative efficiency, leadership skills, rural development planning, financial management, social welfare schemes, and awareness regarding the roles and responsibilities of Panchayat representatives.
In addition, a similar training programme was conducted in Burhanpur district, where 1,294 public representatives from 89 Gram Panchayats of Khaknar Block received specialized training. The programme aimed to empower local representatives with practical knowledge and governance skills necessary for effective implementation of government schemes and community development initiatives at the grassroots level.
The initiative played a significant role in enhancing the capabilities of elected representatives, promoting transparent governance, encouraging community participation, and strengthening rural development systems in both Khandwa and Burhanpur districts.
One of the most impactful initiatives undertaken by the organization has been the organization of “Nukkad Natak” (street plays) across different villages and towns of Khandwa district. Street plays have been used as a powerful medium to directly connect with local communities and deliver social awareness messages in an engaging and easily understandable manner.
So far, the organization has successfully conducted approximately 3,000 street plays in various villages and public places throughout the district. These performances highlighted the harmful consequences of tobacco consumption, alcohol abuse, and drug addiction while motivating people to adopt healthier habits and support a drug-free society. The initiative received active participation and appreciation from local communities, educational institutions, youth groups, and social organizations.
Through the organization’s continuous and tireless efforts in collaboration with the Municipal Corporation Khandwa, a major achievement was accomplished in promoting public health awareness. Recognizing the importance of creating a healthier and tobacco-free environment, the Municipal Corporation Khandwa officially declared the municipal area as a tobacco-prohibited zone.
This significant initiative was implemented under the leadership and support of Mayor Mr. Veer Singh Hindon and Commissioner Mr. Somnath Jharia. The declaration marked an important step towards reducing tobacco consumption in public places and encouraging citizens to maintain a cleaner, healthier, and safer social environment. The initiative also strengthened community awareness regarding the dangers of tobacco and inspired collective responsibility towards public health protection.
Under the Samagra Swachhata Abhiyan evam Swa Jaldhara Karyakram, Lok Shiksha Evam Prashikshan Samiti conducted training programmes for Jal Evam Swachhata Samitis in villages across all 7 blocks of Khandwa district from November 2008 to February 2009. The programme focused on sanitation awareness, clean drinking water management, hygiene practices, and community participation in rural development activities.
The organization also assisted in opening bank accounts for the village committees to ensure proper financial management and smooth implementation of water and sanitation programmes at the grassroots level.
During the year 2009–2010, Lok Shiksha Evam Prashikshan Samiti conducted training programmes for Village Vigilance and Monitoring Committees in villages across all 7 blocks of Khandwa district.
The training aimed to strengthen transparency, accountability, and public participation in rural development programmes. Committee members were guided about their responsibilities in monitoring village-level activities, government schemes, and ensuring effective implementation of community welfare initiatives.
